Dreams that swallow people

—Looking Through the Peepholes

The Full Story

Statement

Dreams that swallow people originated from my true feelings about dreams. My family life has changed a lot in 2021. At that time, dreaming became something I had to experience every day. In such a situation, I felt the impact of the dreams on my real life, and they were swallowing me like a shadow. Thus, I think dreams can swallow people.

The experience of traveling abroad made me realize that it seems that only the Chinese take drinking hot water very seriously. We believe that people should drink hot water when they are sick. For girls, they should drink hot water when they have dysmenorrhea. There is even a folk saying that hot water cures all diseases. I can't help thinking about when and why the Chinese hot water culture came into being. In Dreams that swallow people II, I put real human thoughts on miniature figures to convey the different views of contemporary Chinese on hot water culture. This time, I define miniature figures as beings that exist in parallel time and space, with the ability to think and dream. This series shows what hot water-related dreams occur when figures are surrounded by hot water. The scenes are similar to the real life of human beings, and there are also some unreasonable scenes, in order to highlight that they do not exist in a space exactly the same as the earth. In addition, this is an interactive installation, I try to let the audience observe the dreams of the figures through the peephole. It enhances the distance between the figures, the audience and me.

Background of Hot Water Culture

During the Korean War in January 1952, the U.S. military dropped germ-carrying insects, mice, birds and other small animals in Northeast China and North Korea, resulting in a large-scale plague in the volunteer soldiers. In order to resist the germ warfare of the United States, China began to advocate the patriotic hygiene movement in 1952. The Chinese government calls on everyone to boil the water before drinking it. Since then, the Chinese people have developed the habit of drinking hot water until today.

With the development of time, hot water culture has gradually formed in the life of Chinese people. Hot water is believed to treat many minor ailments, kill bacteria, and more.
